About this tour

Rising above 4,000 meters, the High Atlas Mountains form part of a vast range stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Algerian border. This rugged terrain is home to the indigenous Berber (Amazigh) people, who have lived in these mountains for over 5,000 years in small earthen villages clinging to the slopes — many accessible only by mule or on foot.

This 3-day trek takes you to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167m), the highest peak in North Africa, while offering an authentic glimpse into Berber mountain life, where traditional hospitality and age-old customs remain largely untouched by the modern world. Along the way, you’ll trek through dramatic valleys, overnight at mountain huts, and share meals with local communities before returning to the vibrant city of Marrakech.

Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech → Imlil → Sidi Chamharouch → Toubkal Refuge

We depart Marrakech early, driving approximately 1.5 hours to Imlil, the trailhead village at the foot of Mount Toubkal. Here we meet our mules and muleteers, who carry our luggage and camping equipment ahead to the first camp.

The trek begins with a gentle one-hour walk through scenic countryside to the village of Aremd (1,900m). We continue along the valley of the Assif n'Tifnoute River to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (2,310m), enjoying sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. After a further two-hour climb over steeper terrain, we stop for a well-earned lunch, complete with local delicacies and traditional mint tea. The final two-hour ascent brings us to the Toubkal Refuge (3,200m), where we camp beside a mountain stream for the night.

Approx. 6 hours trekking

Day 2 Mount Toubkal Summit (4,167m)

An early start to attempt North Africa's highest peak. The final stretch involves a steep climb with some scrambling, but the reward is breathtaking: panoramic views across the entire Atlas range, and on clear days, the distant outline of the Atlantic coast to the west and the Sahara's dunes to the east.

After resting at the summit, we descend back to the refuge to rest and celebrate a memorable day on the mountain.

Approx. 7 hours walking, including rest stops

Day 3Toubkal → Imlil → Marrakech

After breakfast, we begin our descent back toward Imlil, passing through picturesque Berber villages along the way. This is a chance to slow down, meet local families, and learn about a way of life shaped by these mountains for generations. Enjoy a traditional lunch in a Berber home or a scenic picnic stop before continuing.

In the afternoon, we drive back to Marrakech, arriving in time to settle into a riad near Jemaa el-Fnaa — marking the end of an unforgettable mountain adventure.
